Sept. 22, 2026 (NWONewsWatch.com) - The Ford government [Ontario, Canada] is giving Thunder Bay Pulp and Paper more than $2.4 million for three projects aimed at increasing production, decreasing costs and reducing environmental impact.
"One of the projects reduces our bleaching costs to make the bleached pulp, which has two benefits. One, it also lowers our cost, but secondly, it lowers our emissions. Another project is strictly related to reducing our energy consumption. And the third project does increase our production," Norm Bush, chief executive officer for the mill, said [on Sept. 17].
The funding is for planned boiler and chemical plant upgrades at the mill and to improve daily kraft production by 11 per cent, potentially creating a market for over 130,000 tonnes of forest biomass yearly, according to the provincial release.
Upgrading the equipment will reduce the company's dependence on chemicals by roughly 30 per cent, while the boiler upgrades will cut annual natural gas use by over 5 million cubic metres, equal to heating 2,000 Northern Ontario homes for a year.

The mill is owned by Connecticut-based Atlas Holdings, which purchased the operation from Resolute Forest Products in 2023.
