Sept. 8, 2026 - Metsä Fibre announced that it has started new change negotiations concerning potential temporary layoffs at its Joutseno pulp mill in Finland. The negotiations will involve the entire personnel of the mill, approximately 160 people in total.
"The pulp market situation remains challenging. Due to the demand outlook and the situation in the wood market, we need to prepare for adjusting pulp production for a longer period than previously anticipated," said Ismo Nousiainen, CEO of Metsä Fibre. "For this reason, we are now compelled to initiate new change negotiations concerning potential temporary layoffs at Joutseno."
Located in Lappeenranta, the Joutseno pulp mill has the capacity to produce 690,000 tonnes per year of softwood pulp as its main product. It is used as raw material for paperboard, tissue and printing papers, as well as specialty products.
Metsä Fibre, a member of the Metsä Group, is a leading producer of wood-based bioproducts, such as pulp, sawn timber, biochemicals and bioenergy. The company produces pulp and bioproducts at four mills and sawn timber products at four sawmills in Finland.
