Renova's new biomass plant at its Torres Novas tissue mill replaces most of the natural gas previously used to generate thermal energy for tissue production.
July 7, 2026 - Portuguese tissue producer Renova on June 30 inaugurated its "Descarbonizar@Renova" project at Factory 2 in Torres Novas, Portugal. The EUR 11 million investment includes a new biomass energy plant designed to reduce the company's carbon footprint while improving energy efficiency.
About EUR 5.8 million of the investment was financed through the European Union's Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR).
According to news outlets, the new biomass plant replaces most of the natural gas previously used to generate thermal energy for tissue production. By switching to renewable biomass, the company has reduced its Scope 1 and Scope 2 carbon dioxide emissions by 50.6% compared with 2020 levels, surpassing the project's original target of a 43% reduction.
The new facility is expected to prevent approximately 54,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually, while natural gas will now be used only as a backup during maintenance or operational interruptions.
Renova Chairman and CEO Paulo Pereira da Silva emphasized that the project represents a major step forward in the company's sustainability journey.
"With this project, we have taken a giant step in our energy transition and decarbonization," said Renova Chairman and CEO Paulo Pereira da Silva during the inauguration ceremony. "It brought us energy savings, competitiveness, a reduction of the carbon footprint and a lot of coherence for our products."
The company noted that the project included the installation of the first electric drying unit for paper, strengthening of residual heat recovery systems, and increased environmental monitoring of industrial processes.
With headquarters in Torres Nova, Portugal, Renova is an European brand of high quality and innovative tissue paper products. Available in more than 60 countries worldwide, the company offers colorful designs and new functional solutions through stylish and environmentally-friendly products.
