Norske Skog's soon-to-be-launched book paper will be known as "NOR Book", which will be produced from 100% virgin fibre and designed to deliver low CO2 emissions.
March 23, 2026 - Norske Skog said that work is nearing completion on PM1 at its mill in Skogn, Norway, that will give the machine the capability to produce high-quality book paper, along with its usual paper grade, newsprint.
The new book paper will be marketed under the brand name "NOR Book."
"The development represents an investment of NOK 40 million (EUR 3.5 million), giving us the flexibility to produce more than 140,000 tonnes annually," the company said. "NOR Book will be produced from 100% virgin fibre and is designed to deliver industry-leading low CO2 emissions.
"Across the site, teams are working closely together to prepare for the transition that will allow us to enter the European book paper market," the company added.
HÃ¥vard Busklein, Managing Director at Norske Skog Skogn, stated, "What stands out most in this project is the collaboration across departments. The engagement and dedication from colleagues throughout the organization have been outstanding. It is this teamwork that gives us confidence as we move closer to launch."
Norske Skog noted that the European book paper market remains stable, and expects to start regular delivery of book paper to customers from mid-2026.
Norske Skog Skogn is one of the largest newsprint mills in Europe with the installed capacity to produce about 480,000 tonnes per year of newsprint on three paper machines — PM1, PM2, PM3. Established in 1962, the mill began production with its first newsprint machine in 1966. The mill features its own port facilities and operates regular shipping routes to the UK and Continental Europe. In addition to newsprint and improved newsprint, the Skogn mill is also capable of producing interliner, a packaging product, and will soon start production of book paper.
Norske Skog Group, with four mills in Europe, is a leading producer of publication papers, including newsprint, uncoated and coated mechanical grades, supercalendered (SC), and book paper. In addition, the company also produces recycled containerboard (testliner and fluting) at two of the mills. The Group also operates one publication paper mill in Australasia.
