Metsä Fibre to Start Change Negotiations on Potential Layoffs at Joutseno Pulp Mill

March 12, 2026 - Metsä Fibre announced that it is starting change negotiations on potential layoffs at the Joutseno pulp mill in Finland.

In a press release, the company said, "Due to the uncertain market situation for pulp, Metsä Fibre will begin change negotiations regarding potential temporary layoffs of up to 90 days at its Joutseno pulp mill. The negotiations cover the entire mill personnel, approximately 170 employees."

On March 3, Metsä Fibre announced plans to take market-related production downtime at Joutseno mill — beginning March 31 — to "adjust pulp production to match the current uncertain demand situation in the Asian markets."

The Joutseno pulp mill has the capacity to produce 690,000 tonnes per year of high-quality softwood pulp, which is used as raw material for paperboard, tissue and printing papers, as well as specialty products. The mill's pulp is made of both sawmill chips and Nordic pine and spruce.

Metsä Fibre, a member of the Metsä Group, is a leading producer of wood-based bioproducts, such as pulp, sawn timber, biochemicals and bioenergy. The company produces pulp and bioproducts at four mills and sawn timber products at four sawmills in Finland.
