Metsä Fibre to Take Market-Related Production Downtime at Joutseno Pulp Mill

March 3, 2026 - Metsä Fibre announced that it is initiating a production shutdown at its Joutseno pulp mill in Finland on March 31.

Metsä Fibre said the production shutdown will be used to "adjust pulp production to match the current uncertain demand situation in the Asian markets."

The Joutseno pulp mill has the capacity to produce 690,000 tonnes per year of high-quality softwood pulp, which is used as raw material for paperboard, tissue and printing papers, as well as specialty products. The mill's pulp is made of both sawmill chips and Nordic pine and spruce.

"We are monitoring the market situation, and the decision to restart production will be made based on it," the company said.

This will be the second market-related shutdown of the Joutseno pulp mill in the past nine months. The mill was shut down from June of 2025 until its restart on December 8.

Metsä Fibre, a member of the Metsä Group, is a leading producer of wood-based bioproducts, such as pulp, sawn timber, biochemicals and bioenergy. The company produces pulp and bioproducts at four mills and sawn timber products at four sawmills in Finland.
