Metsä Fibre to Restart Joutseno Pulp Mill; Temporarily Curtail Production at Rauma Mill

Dec. 2, 2025 - Metsä Fibre announced that it will restart the Joutseno pulp mill in Finland on December 8. Production at the mill was temporarily shutdown back in June of this year to adjust pulp inventory levels due to low order volumes from Asia and "uncertain" market conditions.

The Joutseno mill has the capacity to produce 690,000 tonnes per year of softwood pulp and employs about 190 people.

Rauma Mill Shutdown

At Metsä Fibre's Rauma pulp mill, a production curtailment shutdown of approximately one month will begin on December 15, with a restart scheduled to take place gradually by department from January 7, 2026.

"Through production shutdowns, we are adjusting our production to reflect the market demand for long fibre softwood pulp," said Ismo Nousiainen, CEO of Metsä Fibre. "Since the market situation for softwood pulp is estimated to continue uncertain for the beginning of next year, we are preparing for significant production curtailments at Joutseno pulp mill also during 2026."

The Rauma mill has the capacity to produce 650,000 tonnes per year of softwood pulp and employs 190 people.

Metsä Fibre, a member of the Metsä Group, is a leading producer of wood-based bioproducts, such as pulp, sawn timber, biochemicals and bioenergy. The company produces pulp and bioproducts at four mills and sawn timber products at four sawmills in Finland.
