The new tissue paper machine, supported by three converting lines for rolled and folded tissues, boosts capacity and efficiency at Mariestad mill in Sweden.
Nov. 20, 2025 - Metsä Tissue has started full-scale production at its expanded and modernized tissue paper mill in Mariestad, Sweden. The EUR 370 million investment doubles the mill's annual tissue paper capacity to 145,000 tonnes, significantly strengthening the local supply of high-quality tissues, like Lambi, Serla, and Katrin products for both consumers and professional customers across Scandinavia.
Valmet supplied the new Advantage DCT 200 TS tissue machine and converting lines for the modernization project.
The Mariestad investment is one of the largest in the tissue business in Europe, consisting of the addition of a new paper machine and three new converting lines. With the expanded local production and modernized technology, the renewed Mariestad mill enhances tissue availability in the region, reduces reliance on imports and improves security of supply for everyday hygiene needs.
Boosted local production capacity: The new state-of-the-art tissue paper machine, supported by three converting lines for rolled and folded tissues, boosts capacity and efficiency to serve Scandinavian consumer and professional tissue markets. Increased local production shortens delivery times, lowers transport emissions, and improves supply reliability — enabling faster response to demand shifts and reducing global supply chain risks.
Strengthened local employment: Nearly 100 new jobs have been created, reinforcing Metsä Tissue's strong local presence in Sweden and its commitment to serving customers across the Scandinavian region.
Latest automation technology: A fully automated high-bay warehouse and laser-guided automated vehicles ensure faster and safer handling of finished goods and materials. This also improves delivery reliability through streamlined logistics and real-time inventory control.
Improved environmental efficiency: The new paper machine technology enables improved energy efficiency and reduces water use considerably. This marks a major step forward in tissue production and enables lower emissions per each tonne produced.
High quality fresh fibre products: The expansion focuses on fresh fibre-based production, increasing Metsä Tissue's Swedish mills total fresh fibre share to 80 percent. Fresh wood fibre is an optimal raw material for hygiene tissues due to its purity and high quality. The advanced technology of the new machinery further enhances product quality.
