July 7, 2025 - Metsä Tissue announced the successful conclusion of negotiations with the works council regarding its investment and capacity adjustment plan introduced in January 2025 at its Kreuzau mill in Germany.
In January, Metsä Tissue said that it would implement several actions to "ensure the mill's long-term competitiveness: a mix of efficiency measures, investments into modernizing the production equipment and capacity adjustments, including the closure of one paper machine at the end of its lifecycle.
"The target is to balance the paper making and converting capacities at the mill and to focus the mill on manufacturing only consumer tissue products," the company said.
As a result of the negotiations, the total reduction of employees is 93 out of original estimation of 123 and made without compulsory redundancies.
Tobias Lüning, SVP West, and Country Manager of Metsä Tissue, stated, "We are firmly committed to the future of Kreuzau mill. With the jointly developed plan to realign the mill and the associated investments, we are laying the foundation for a competitive future production. We are not only securing remaining jobs but also strengthening our role as a reliable partner for sustainable hygiene tissue papers — today and in the future."
Kreuzau is one of the largest tissue paper mills in Europe and plays a central role within Metsä Group. The mill supplies customers in Central Europe with high-quality fresh fiber tissue paper products.
Metsä Tissue has nine paper mills around Europe producing hygiene products for consumers and professionals and greaseproof papers for professional and consumer use. Metsä Tissue's head office is in Espoo, Finland. Consumer tissue products are sold under the brands: Lambi, Serla, Mola and Tento. Katrin brand portfolio is targeted to professional users and SAGA is Metsä Tissue's greaseproof papers brand.
