April 30, 2025 - Mondi announced that it has successfully started up its Duino recycled containerboard mill, which is located near Trieste, Italy.
Mondi acquired the Duino paper mill in mid-January 2023 from the Burgo Group for EUR 40 million. At that time, Mondi announced plans to invest EUR 200 million to convert the mill's paper machine from the production of lightweight coated mechanical paper to high-quality recycled containerboard.
According to Mondi, once fully ramped up, the rebuilt machine will produce 420,000 tonnes per year of high-quality recycled containerboard.
"Starting up this machine on time is a fantastic achievement and a testament to the dedication and expertise of our team," said Markus Gärtner, CEO Mondi Corrugated Packaging. "With Mondi Duino now part of our integrated value chain, we are excited to serve our customers with sustainable packaging solutions from our expanded network of six containerboard mills worldwide."
Throughout the ramp-up phase, Mondi is focused on maintaining consistent production of high-quality recycled containerboard made from 100% recovered fiber.
Where possible, the mill will source recycled materials locally, the company added.
Mondi is a global leader in packaging and paper, offering innovative and sustainable packaging and paper solutions. The company is fully integrated across the packaging and paper value chain.
