Rottneros to Cut 24 Jobs at Vallvik Pulp Mill in Sweden Due to Costs, Weak Pricing

April 12, 2023 - Rottneros said that it has been forced to cut 24 jobs at its Vallvik Mill in Sweden due to increasing costs, falling pulp prices and a weaker USD in the long term.

Vallvik Mill produces ECF (Elemental Chlorine Free) Bleached long-fiber sulphate pulp and UKP (Unbleached Kraft Pulp) Unbleached long-fiber sulphate pulp. The mill has the installed capacity to produce about 240,000 tonnes per year with the pulp product mix.

According to Rottneros website, The Vallvik Mill has about 180 employees.

"This is a tough message we have given to our staff today," said Lennart Eberleh, President and CEO of Rottneros. "We have a good year behind us, but as we look ahead, it is necessary to review our organization in order to maintain stable operations going forward.

"It may be difficult to understand that we have to lay off staff, but it is necessary for us to have a long-term profitable operation at Vallvik Mill," Eberleh said.

Rottneros is an independent producer of market pulp. The Group comprises the parent company Rottneros AB and its subsidiaries Rottneros Bruk AB and Vallviks Bruk AB with operations involving the production and sale of market pulp. The Group also includes Rottneros Packaging AB, which manufactures fibre trays, the wood procurement company Rottneros Baltic SIA in Latvia and the forest operator Nykvist Skogs AB.
