Total U.S. Boxboard Monthly Production Increased Five Percent in December 2020

Jan. 21, 2021 - The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) has released its December 2020 Boxboard Monthly report. According to the report, total boxboard production in December increased five percent compared to December 2019. It was down three percent when compared to the same 12 months of 2019.

The boxboard operating rate was 93.8 percent, up 5.3 points from December 2019 and essentially flat (-0.2 pts.) year-to-date.

  • Solid Bleached Boxboard production in December increased three percent compared to December 2019. It was down four percent when compared to the same 12months of 2019.
  • Recycled Boxboard production in December increased one percent compared to December 2019. It was down two percent when compared to the same 12 months of 2019.
  • Unbleached Kraft & Gypsum production in December increased 12 percent compared to December 2019. It was essentially flat (-0.5 percent) when compared to the same 12 months of 2019.

NOTE: Beginning in 2021, AF&PA will publish the Boxboard reports on a quarterly basis; the reports will still contain the monthly data. The first report with 2021 data will be published in April 2021. Please contact comm@afandpa.org with questions.
