Nov. 22, 2021 - Paper Excellence on Nov. 18 announced the temporary curtailment of operations at its Catalyst Paper tiskwat mill in Powell River, British Columbia, Canada. The mill produces high quality specialty papers that are used in catalogues, magazines, newsletters, inserts, flyers, high-volume weekend newspaper magazines and food packaging papers.
Paper Excellence said, "Severe challenges with local and global supply chain congestion exacerbated by British Columbia's recent atmospheric river event have caused significant paper inventory and movement problems for the company."
The curtailment is targeted to begin in the week of November 22, 2021 and the company will evaluate conditions for potential restart in early January 2022.
Paper Excellence said it will work to supply paper customers with production from Crofton and Port Alberni as it hopes for a speedy return to normalcy of supply chain performance.
Crofton's pulp and paper operations are currently curtailed until November 24 with its power boiler's maintenance outage.
Paper Excellence noted that it "continues to believe that Canada is a leader in the pulp and paper industry and remains committed to its long-term investments here."
Paper Excellence, headquartered in British Columbia, is a diversified manufacturer of pulp and specialty, printing, writing, and packaging papers. The company operates seven mills and a large-scale cargo distribution center in Canada producing and shipping over 2.8 million tonnes annually with a workforce of more than 2,800.
