Feb. 25, 2021 - SCA early this morning permanently shut-down paper machine LWC4 at Ortviken paper mill in Sweden. With this, SCA's production of publication paper has come to an end.

Publication paper production started at Ortviken in 1958 with the production of newsprint. The mill went on to produce coated publication paper grades for magazines and commercial print.

The Ortviken mill has produced up to 800,000 tonnes per year and was one of the world's largest mills for publication paper production.

SCA is now investing SEK 1.45 billion (approx. USD 162 million) to convert the Ortviken mill for the production of chemically pre-treated thermo-mechanical pulp (CTMP). When operational, Ortviken will have the capacity to produce 300,000 tonnes per year of CTMP.

At the same time, SCA is leasing a portion of the mill to Renewcell, a textile recycling company based in Stockholm, Sweden, that is building a production line for the recycling of textile fibre on the site.

With headquarters in Sundsvall, Sweden, SCA produces packaging paper, pulp, wood products and renewable energy, along with providing services for forest owners and efficient transport solutions. To learn more, visit: www.sca.com.
