Oct. 7, 2020 - Nippon Paper Industries announced that its subsidiary, Jujo Thermal, has completed the construction of facilities and equipment for the mass production of SHIELDPLUS®, a new product that adds barrier properties to paper. The operation started-up in September.

The new facilities, which represent a capital investment of 5 million euros, are located on the site of Jujo Thermal's paper mill in Kauttua, Finland.

According to Jujo Thermal, SHIELDPLUS products are paper-based materials with excellent barrier properties against oxygen, water vapour and aromas. The material consists of wood-based fibres and is protected with a water-based barrier coating. It is also recyclable.

Jujo Thermal noted that it has been working on the development and marketing of SHIELDPLUS by utilizing its coating technology developed in its existing thermal paper business.

"We believe that paper as packaging material holds a great deal of potential," explained Masashi Okamoto, Technical Development Director & Packaging Specialist for Jujo Thermal. "It is a part of the solution to developing environmentally friendly packaging materials.

The new facilities include an expansion of the coating color kitchen to meet the requirements of SHIELDPLUS production, which is designed to meet strict hygiene standards for food packaging applications, with plans to obtaining ISO 22000 and other certifications.

"The new colour kitchen strengthens our product development capabilities. We are, indeed, planning to produce other types of paper-based materials suitable for packaging use in the future," Okamoto added.

Under the slogan of 'Let paper do what it can do', the company is pushing ahead with paper-based solutions that help resolve social issues. The SHIELDPLUS series is produced by adding barrier functions to paper and offers paper as an alternative option to conventional barrier materials such as plastics and aluminum.

Jujo Thermal said that it will start providing samples of SHIELDPLUS and promote its development in the global market with a focus on the European market.
