Papier- und Kartonfabrik Varel Continues EUR 280 Million Investment Program at Varel Mill

Sept. 24, 2020 - Papier- und Kartonfabrik Varel (PKV) announced that it is continuing to implement its strategic investment program at its paper mill in Varel, Lower Saxony, Germany. The program includes a total of 280 million Euro includes future-oriented investments focused on product quality and increasing cartonboard production.

The company produces an extensive range of cartonboard products, and specializes in high grammages.

According to PKV, engineers and fitters are currently putting the finishing touches to major investments in equipment for PKV board production — board machine 2 will soon be able to use a new online sheeter, the sheeter for board machine 3 has been extensively modernized. The projects will result in improved precision cutting, higher availability and thus a larger cutting capacity, so that the company is well prepared for further investments in board machines.

"High-quality cardboard made of waste paper is sustainable, flexible and resilient — this product has a future," said PKV shareholder Kristian Evers. "In Varel, we have always made sure that we are as broadly based as possible for our customers. These investments will help us to move forward — together with our outstanding know-how, especially in the area of high grammages."

Cardboard is produced in Varel in basis weights between 350 and 1400 g/m2, as gray or brown board, GD or GT and laminated quality. All products are FSC-certified and recyclable in accordance with the EN 13430 standard. The mill's products are used in the food industry, for industrial solutions, point-of-sale packaging or, for example, heavy-duty shipping envelopes made of brown cardboard.

In cooperation with the PKV sister company Jade-Pack, PKV cardboard and paper are also used to create special solutions for the highest technical requirements in the packaging of food and industrial goods.

Further investments in cartonboard production are in the planning stage, such as a modernization of the stock preparation.

The Varel paper and board mill will further develop its plant in the coming years to a production capacity of one million tons of corrugated medium and board grades produced recycled paper. At the same time, PKV continues to improve its energy efficiency through numerous investments. All these projects are part of a seven-year strategic program with a total volume of around 280 million euros, which PKV is currently implementing to strengthen and modernize the site.

Papier- u. Kartonfabrik Varel manufactures recycled cardboard, fluting and liners for the national and international packaging industry. Currently, the Varel mill produces a total of 850,000 tons per year of paper and cardboard on two board machines (KM2 and KM3) and two paper machines (PM4 and PM 5).
