Total U.S. Printing-Writing Paper Shipments Decreased Five Percent in February 2020

Total printing-writing paper inventory levels in February 2020 increased one percent when compared to January 2020.

March 17, 2020 - The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) released its February 2020 Printing-Writing Monthly report. According to the report, total printing-writing paper shipments decreased five percent in February compared to February 2019. U.S. purchases of total printing-writing papers decreased six percent in February compared to the same month last year.

Total printing-writing paper inventory levels increased one percent when compared to January 2020.

• U.S. purchases of uncoated free sheet (UFS) papers in February decreased seven percent compared to last February while the inventory level remained essentially flat (+0.3%) compared to January 2020. UFS imports decreased 36 percent while exports increased 31 percent in January 2020.
• Coated free sheet (CFS) paper shipments increased two percent compared to February 2019 while the inventory level increased three percent compared to January 2020. CFS imports decreased 19 percent while exports increased 20 percent in January 2020.
• U.S. purchases of coated mechanical (CM) papers in February decreased 13 percent compared to last February while the inventory level increased seven percent compared to January 2020. CM imports and exports both decreased compared to January 2019, down 17 percent and five percent respectively.
• Uncoated mechanical (UM) paper shipments decreased five percent compared to February 2019 while the inventory level decreased five percent compared to January 2020. UM imports decreased 11 percent while exports increased 27 percent in January 2020.
