Klabin to Build Pilot Mill Complex for Research and Development of Bioproducts
Klabin's new Pilot Mill Complex will be used for research and development of microfibrillated pulp (MFC) and its applications in Klabin's paper products. The new facility will also conduct studies on commercial uses for lignin.
Sept. 20, 2018 - Klabin on Sept. 12 announced that an R$32 million (US$7.77 million) investment has been approved for its research and development program, involving the construction of a Pilot Mill Complex at the Monte Alegre paper mill, in Telêmaco Borba (Paraná), Brazil.
Klabin's Monte Alegre mill produces kraftliner and paperboard for packaging and sells eucalyptus and pine logs. The mill production unit also consists of 275,600 hectares of forest area that includes 135,200 hectares of planted pine and eucalypt forests and 110,300 hectares of preserved native forests.
According to Klabin, the new Pilot Mill Complex will be used for research and development of microfibrillated pulp (MFC) and its applications in Klabin's paper products. The new facility will also conduct studies on commercial uses for lignin.
The pilot mill complex project follows Klabin's 'Technology Center' which was inaugurated in 2017. The Technology Center produces a broad range of forestry products and is capable of running simulations of the company's mills production lines, anticipating trends and developing technologies and sustainable applications.
“All activities in our Technology Center are on a laboratory scale. Just over a year after its inauguration, we achieved a level of development maturity that makes it necessary to produce some materials on a larger scale, enabling prolonged industrial tests. That gave rise to the need to create a Pilot Mill Complex, which should be operational in the fourth quarter of 2019,” explained Francisco Razzolini, Klabin's Industrial Technology, Innovation, Sustainability and Pulp Business Officer.
Klabin also announced this year the acquisition of a 12.5% interest in the Israeli startup Melodea Bio Based Solutions, a pioneer in the technology for extracting cellulose nanocrystalline (CNC), a 100% biobased and renewable product.
“The Pilot Mill Complex reinforces our focus on the development of bioeconomical solutions that value the responsible, efficient and sustainable use of resources,” Razzolini added.
Klabin is the largest producer and exporter of paper for packaging in Brazil, its only company offering one-stop solutions in hardwood, softwood and fluff pulp, and the leader in corrugated board packaging and industrial bags. Founded in 1899, it has 17 industrial units in Brazil and one in Argentina. To learn more, please visit:www.klabin.com.br.
