White Birch Paper to Close Bear Island Newsprint Mill in Virginia
The Bear Island mill produces about 240,000 metric tons of newsprint annually and employs about 165 people.
May 17, 2017 – White Birch Paper is closing its Bear Island newsprint mill in Ashland, Virginia, according to a story on the Richmond Times-Dispatch's website.
The news story said that the mill's 165 employees were notified today.
White Birch Paper plans to indefinitely idle papermaking operations at the mill and supply customers from its three other paper mills, according to the story.
The Bear Island mill produces about 240,000 metric tons of newsprint annually.
“Difficult market pricing, challenging cost fundamentals and declining demand, necessitate identifying and optimizing our lowest cost capacity,” said Christopher Brant, President and COO of White Birch.
The final date of operations will be announced shortly, the company said.
