International Paper APPM Continues Support of Education and Community Development
IP-APPM has been continuously working towards creating better infrastructure for the school students under its corporate social responsibility program.
November 17, 2015 - International Paper APPM Limited (IP-APPM), a group company of International Paper in India, today shared its continued commitment towards the local community development in Rajahmundry city and Kadiam village in East Godavari districts as part of Corporate Social Responsibility Program in the sectors of education, environment and engagement.
Under Project Saathi, a wholly employee-owned project, the company handed over cheques towards annual school fees of 48 students who have been selected as the beneficiaries under the project. Employees who are the donors have made contributions through one time payments as well as payroll deductions. These children, otherwise, were supporting their family to earn a living. These children are now studying at APPM Model School in Rajahmundry and doing well in their studies. Project Saathi is being currently run in APPM Model High School and is in its second year of implementation.
Also receiving cheques are 24 meritorious students in their second year of post school education — either intermediate or polytechnic as part of the IP India Foundation (IPIF) Scholarship. These 24 students are IP Scholarship awardees — government school children, who received the scholarship based on their performance in Class 10th state board examinations declared in May 2014.
IP India Foundation (IPIF) Scholarship is aimed to attract and retain a growing body of diverse, qualified, accomplished and ambitious students. IPIF Scholarship will support 24 students, from 6 districts of Andhra Pradesh (Vizag, East Godavari, West Godavari, Krishna, Guntur, and Prakasham), who despite the adversity still secured excellent marks in their 10th standard exams. This initiative is funded by IP India Foundation. Over 70 school students will benefit from these 2 programs in the state of Andhra Pradesh.
Mr. Rampraveen Swaminathan, President, International Paper - India and Chairman and Managing Director, IP-APPM handed over the cheques to the students. The event was attended by other senior officials of IP-APPM.
In another event, IP-APPM also inaugurated a bus shelter at Kadiam Panchayat and a compound wall of MPP School in Bhaskararam Nagar in Kadiam. Based on the discussions with Village Panchayat and other stakeholders, IP Foundation identified that the village is in need of this infrastructure. The inauguration of the Bus shelter was done by Mr. Swaminathan. The Chief Guest for the event was Mr. Gorantla Butchaiah Chowdhury, MLA Rajahmundry Rural.
While commenting on these events, Mr. Swaminathan said, “Education and Community development are key pillars of our CSR initiatives. We feel proud in promoting the deserving students who are excelling in their career with the voluntary support of our employees. We hope that with the support of our employees who share the same vision as the company and the local stakeholders, we will continue to enhance the standard of living of the local communities and provide support in creating more basic necessities for them.”
IP-APPM has been continuously working towards creating better infrastructure for the school students under its corporate social responsibility program. Along with running APPM Model School for five decades, which was the 1st English medium school in Rajahmundry (Andhra Pradesh), IP-APPM also provided benches, drinking water, toilets, schools bags, shoes, etc. to the schools in rural areas.
IP-APPM has also provided over 4500 solar lamps to the students of 10th standard to ensure that they prepare for board exams during electricity cuts in villages.
In addition to various activities for promoting education for the less privileged, IP-APPM has also constructed check dams at Tantikonda Village in East Godavari District and Mamidilova village in Vishakhapatnam district in recent years. The activities are aimed at sustainable development — in the areas of education, contributions are aimed at arresting school dropouts, building careers of youth and improving standard of education.
Similarly, under environment, the company is committed towards Swachh Bharat activities, tree plantations, installation of RO plants, safe drinking water projects which achieve the output of good health and clean surroundings.
