Uncoated Freesheet Price On the Move Again

Feb. 3, 2014 - RISI reported that International Paper (IP) has proposed a $70/ton ($3.50 cwt) price increase across its uncoated freesheet (UFS) paper grades — the second hike in North America in five months.

“IP planned $70 increases, effective March 3, on UFS paper as well as a $50/ton ($2 cwt) March 3 increase on its Carolina coated papers,” RISI said in an online news report. “The $70 increase was unique in that producers over the years generally proposed $50 or $60 increases. October's increase was for $60.”

RISI also reported that Brazilian printing and writing paper suppliers are in the process of implementing a planned 8-10.5% uncoated woodfree (UWF) offset paper price hike announced in December.

RISI noted that according to its PPI Latin America's price survey, “offset prices in Brazil already moved up by around 4% from Real 2,050-2,550/tonne in December to Real 2,150-2,600/tonne this January, and are 1.1% higher over a year ago.”
