Buckeye Technologies Earns AF&PA's Environmental Award

June 26, 2009 - The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) presented Buckeye Technologies Inc. with the 2009 Environmental & Energy Achievement Award. The coveted award recognizes an AF&PA member company that has significantly contributed to advances in the practical application of new and improved environmental and energy technology.

Buckeye Technologies received the award for its San Pedro Bay Wetland Mitigation Bank project, which restored 6,748 acres of freshwater wetlands near Perry, Florida. The wetlands are part of the headwaters of the Fenholloway River and their enhancement will help stabilize water flow within the river and improve water quality.

AF&PA chairman Lee Thomas, of Rayonier, and AF&PA president and CEO Donna Harman presented the award to Buckeye during the Association’s Board of Directors meeting in Washington, D. C. on June 25.

“AF&PA and its member companies are committed to using resources such as water responsibly and to sustaining and improving the environment in which we live. Projects like this one that improve the local environment and make good economic sense are an excellent way to demonstrate this commitment,” Thomas said.

Harman added, “The example set by Buckeye Technologies provides a successful template so that others can make similar improvements in their own communities.”

Applications for the award were reviewed by a panel of judges, which included representatives from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy, Resources for the Future, and retired industry executives. Entrants were judged on their project’s ability to reduce energy use and improve environmental footprints.

Buckeye chairman and CEO John Crowe said the company is honored to receive the AF&PA recognition.

“Buckeye is committed to a sustainable business model that emphasizes continuous environmental improvement. The San Pedro Bay Wetland Mitigation Bank project underscores Buckeye’s commitment to improving the ecosystem in which our Florida manufacturing plant operates. Our intent is to build on this success.”
