European Demand for Newsprint Surges in April
May 25, 2007 - In April, the newsprint sector recorded a massive 80% increase in imports to Europe from North America, the Association of European Publication Paper Producers reported. European demand was up by 3.8% (34,000 tonnes) taking the year-to-date total to 1.5% so far. Total European shipments for April edged up by 0.8% on the back of small rises in both shipments to Europe (0.7%) and exports (0.9%).
SC magazine had an extremely positive month with good increases across the board. European demand climbed 5.4% (15,000 tonnes) with higher demand in every region. There were also strong exports for the month showing a 7.7% increase, which together with the rise in domestic deliveries took the figure for total European shipments to 5.9% up on April last year.
Coated mechanical reels benefited from a rise in demand from Germany in April, which helped to boost overall European demand by 4.8% or 28,000 tonnes. Total European shipments crept up by 0.8% on previous, but could have been more if exports had not fallen by -15.1%.
Uncoated mechanical was the only sector to report slower market conditions in all areas last month. A drop in exports to the US, Turkey and Australia contributed to the -21% (10,000 tonnes) drop in overseas deliveries. European demand slipped by -1.7%, cutting total European shipments by -5.5%.
