Sappi Cloquet Mill Receives Environmental Award

Feb. 7, 2006 - Sappi Fine Paper North America said that its mill in Cloquet, Minnesota, will receive the 2005 Randy Marshall Environmental Stewardship Award. The St. Louis River Citizens Action Committee grants the Randy Marshall Award each year to industries that have made outstanding contributions to environmental stewardship in the St. Louis River area.

Sappi was chosen as the award recipient based on the company's efforts to reduce mercury within the Cloquet Mill, and for the leadership in mercury reduction within the industry. Sappi's efforts to reduce mercury at the Cloquet mill have included implementing mercury-free alternatives and recycling, testing effluent, and changing chemical suppliers.

"Sappi is committed to the communities where we live and work. Our effort to reduce mercury in the Cloquet Mill is just one of the many projects that we have taken on to help preserve the health and environment of the Cloquet community," said Tom Collins, mill manager for Cloquet Operations. "We would like to thank the St. Louis Citizens Action Committee for their dedication to the St. Louis River area."

The St. Louis River Citizens Action Committee consists of people of all ages and walks of life who have worked together for the last 10 years to improve the St. Louis River. The committee is a key partner in the St. Louis River System Remedial Action Plan.
