COLUMNS

Heads-Up
Europe's Strategic Agenda. The Agenda 2020 Technology Alliance recently produced a “technology roadmap” for the forest and paper industry. In Europe, there is something similar: Vision 2030 and the Strategic Research Agenda.

Market Grade
NEWSPRINT. The implosion in U.S. newsprint demand in 2009, driven by an unprecedented collapse in newspaper advertising, is moderating although demand remains weak. However, driven by strong export growth, mill shipments have recovered and allowed for significant price gains over the lows reached in mid-2009. Can the momentum be sustained despite lackluster domestic demand?

Editor's Note
Over-Served on Black Liquor. Companies with kraft pulp-producing mills in 2009 received billions in tax credits under the Alternate Fuel Mixture Credit (mixing black liquor with diesel fuel). Now, the IRS says that under the "cellulosic biofuel producer credit" the black liquor the mills produced in 2009 could be worth twice as much.

No Paper Tiger. A new study identifies Chinese subsidies to its paper sector.

FEATURES

Odor Control in Papermaking
The formation of odors in and around a paper mill is more than just an unpleasant by-product of the papermaking process. The agents at play can affect product quality and create safety problems. Identifying causes of odors and implementing corrective action is paramount to an efficient production process.

EFCA: Part II
The Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA) may or may not make it back to the U.S. Senate floor. However, it is far from dead. In fact, with the authority of the now pro-labor National Labor Relations Board, it may not even be needed.

Recognizing the Giants of the Industry
A look at the Paper Industry International Hall of Fame — how it came to be and its mission — and the five inductees for 2010 that will be honored at the Hall's annual induction ceremony in September.
