Mondi Taking Uncoated Fine Paper Downtime in Austria and Africa

Mondi

April 9, 2020 - Mondi today provided an update regarding curtailments in production as a result of changing market conditions due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Towards the end of March and into early April, Mondi experienced a deterioration in its uncoated fine paper order book in Europe and South Africa as the effects of the various lockdown measures took hold. To offset the decline in demand, the company is taking downtime at the Neusiedler mill in Austria to manage inventory levels.

In addition, Mondi has temporarily stopped production at the Merebank mill in South Africa in line with government regulations. The mill has an annual production capacity of 270,000 tonnes uncoated woodfree paper. Mondi said it will consider further such measures as required.

In a written statement Mondi said, "With the exception of the temporary closure of the Merebank paper mill and temporary closures or other production interruptions at a small number of our paper bags converting plants, all our facilities have been in operation throughout the period. Similarly, to date supply chain issues have been manageable, although we are seeing delays and increased costs in logistics."
