Metsä Board Must Apply for New Environmental Permit for Husum Pulp Mill Renewal Project
The competent authority in Sweden, Länsstyrelsen, has decided that installation of a new recovery boiler at Husum mill will require an amendment in the mill's current environmental permit. Metsä Board said it is ready to apply for an amended permit immediately.
August 30, 2019 - Metsä Board announced that it will need to apply for a new environmental permit for the installation of a new recovery boiler on the site of its integrated board and pulp mill in Husum, Sweden — a project that primarily involves the pulp mill.
On April 26 of this year, Metsä Board announced the launch of pre-engineering for the first phase of the planned renewal of the pulp mill, which consists of a new recovery boiler and a new turbine.
Metsä Board estimated earlier that the final decision on the planned investment could be made in the fourth quarter of 2019 — at the earliest — and that estimate was based on an assumption that the new boiler could be operated under the existing environmental permit.
However, the competent authority in Sweden, Länsstyrelsen, has decided that the installation of a new recovery boiler will require an amendment in the mill's current environmental permit.
Metsä Board said it is ready to apply for an amended permit immediately, and that similar permit processes in Sweden have typically taken between 6 and 12 months. Based on the decision by Länsstyrelsen, Metsä Board now estimates that the final investment decision for the first phase of the renewal can be made in the second quarter of 2020, at the earliest.
