Holmen Paper to Shut SC Paper Machine at Hallsta Mill in 2013

Holmen will close down PM 3 (SC paper) at its Hallsta paper mill in Sweden.

Oct. 2, 2012 - Sweden's Holmen Paper said that it will shut down an SC paper machine at its mill in Hallstavik and focus on the production of MF magazine and book paper on the mill's other two machines.

PM 3, the oldest of the mill's three paper machines, will be cease production during the second half of 2013, Holmen said. At the same time, the company will undertake "energy efficiency measures that, together with the closure, will considerably reduce the mill’s future investment needs."

The machine closure will affect about 230 of the mill's 674 employees.

“The restructuring programme will ensure that Hallsta Paper Mill continues to play an important role in the switch towards becoming a speciality paper company, a process that has been under way at Holmen Paper’s Swedish units for a long time," said Henrik Sjolund, head of Holmen Paper. "It will help improve our chances of growing in the areas of importance to us.”

PM 3 manufactures 140,000 tpy of SC (Super Calendered) paper "for a market with excessive overcapacity," Holmen said.
