Recyclable Cardboard 'Event Seat' Proves Strong, Comfortable and Friend to the Environment

June 28, 2012 (PaperAge) - Atlas Packaging in the UK recently developed an environmentally-friendly “event seat” that also offers a backrest that doubles as an advertising tool.

The appropriately named “Bum Box” is created from recyclable, biodegradable corrugated cardboard from FSC-approved foresting.

According to Atlas, the UK Bum Box, which is originally from Australia, has not altered from its original design, except for the 'experiential marketing' print. It's collapsible, portable, and due to a polycoating, it's re-usable.

Although it only weighs in at 0.5kg, the Bum Box can support up to 120kg on the triangular prism backrest, which can featuring advertising slogans and logos while allowing the user to lean back and get comfortable.

Once assembled, the backrest will mold to the shape of the user, offering support at the shoulder blades and comfort for prolonged periods of time, Atlas noted.

The Bum Box can be printed with any form of design, branding, logo, slogans or advertising through the use of lithographic printing, silk screen printing or Flexo post printing, the company added.

Two "heavyweight testers" from the Barnstable Rugby Club try out the Bum Box event seat.

“One of the most frequently asked questions from our customers is whether the Bum Box really is sturdy enough to withstand the weight of a fully grown adult,” said Jason Sharman, Managing Director of Atlas Packaging, as reported in a story by Field Marketing & Brand Experience.

“Our latest test shows that this is certainly the case. Our testers weighed 85kg and 123 kg and, as you can see, the Bum Boxes are living up to their promise of supporting a maximum weight of 120kgs,” Sharman said.

Easy on the Environment
Besides being constructed from recycled cardboard, the Bum Box is 100% biodegradable. Discarded Bum Boxes can be flattened, compressed and baled allowing for simple and cost effective transportation to plants for recycling.
