RockTenn's Jim Rubright Named Executive Papermaker of the Year

Jim Rubright, Chairman and CEO, RockTenn.

Feb. 9, 2012 - RockTenn Chairman and CEO Jim Rubright has been named PaperAge's "Executive Papermaker of the Year." This is the second time Mr. Rubright has earned the award. He first received the Executive Papermaker of the Year honor in 2009.

PaperAge has annually selected recipients of its Executive Papermaker of the Year Award based on corporate vision, strategic objectives and strong leadership both within the individual's company and in the paper industry as a whole. The award has been an industry tradition since 1988.

Rubright joined RockTenn in October 1999 as CEO and was named chairman of the board in January 2000. Previously, Rubright served as executive vice president of Sonat, a Birmingham, Alabama-based energy company where he oversaw the company's natural gas pipeline and energy marketing business. Prior to that, he was an M&A attorney and partner for over 20 years with the legal firm King & Spalding in Atlanta, Georgia.

Under Rubright's leadership over the last 12 years, RockTenn's sales have gone from $1.3 billion to $10 billion. In addition, RockTenn's total shareholder return over the 12 years ended September 30, 2011 was 327%.

On May 27, 2011, RockTenn closed on its acquisition of Smurfit-Stone Container, positioning the company in North America as the second largest producer of containerboard, the second largest producer of coated recycled board, and one of the largest paper recyclers. The deal also balanced RockTenn's fiber mix to 55% virgin and 45% recycled.

A number of industry peers and analysts consider RockTenn's acquisition of Smurfit-Stone a “positive” for the industry. “We believe that the combination will prove value-enhancing for both RockTenn shareholders and the overall industry,” noted one senior analyst who covers the containerboard sector.
