Pulp Markets Remain Firm as NBSK Price Jumps Up
April 12, 2011 - The price for Northern Bleached Hardwood Kraft pulp (NBSK) this week jumped up by about US $20 per ton to US $1013.43 per ton from last week's average price, reported Finnish price indexer FOEX.
According FOEX, the low market pulp sales volumes in early-2011 — largely due to the weakness in production of printing and writing papers — have not held back prices in the softwood pulp market.
"With good demand pull outside the U.S. and with some maintenance down-time already being taken and some more to come, the market has been firm," said FOEX. "Even in hardwood, the market has tightened, although the resistance to price increase initiatives has been much stronger than in softwood."
FOEX noted that several major pulp producers announced a US $30 per ton price increase effective April 1, and that most of those announced price hikes are already showing in FOEX's benchmark pricing.
