Jef Howell To Receive PIMA’s Ray H. Cross Community Service Award

March 22, 2011– Jef Howell, purchasing manager of Verso Paper Corp.’s Androscoggin Mill in Jay, Maine, will receive the 2011 Ray H. Cross Community Service Award, presented by PIMA (Paper Industry Management Association). This award pays tribute to pulp and paper industry persons who have rendered outstanding service to their communities by involvement in the activities of local business, educational, civic and philanthropic organizations.

"Jef Howell's hard work and dedication in a wide range of roles demonstrates how involvement in community service can help improve the local community and the lives of everyone involved," notes Ray Heuchling, PIMA Executive Council Chair. "His many accomplishments working with and leading local education, youth sports, business and civic groups make him an outstanding choice for PIMA's 2011 Community Service Award."

Howell will receive the award during the 2011 PaperCon Conference

A 1981 graduate of the University of Maine, Howell has worked at the Androscoggin Mill for 30 years and has been Purchasing Manager for the past 12 years. He has also worked in Finance and the Pulp Group during his tenure at Verso.

Howell’s community involvement is extensive. He is a member and Past Chair of the Jay, Livermore, Livermore Falls Chamber of Commerce. He has also served on the local school board, including several terms as Chair. While serving as Chair, Jef was instrumental in building a much-needed elementary school in the area.

He is a past board member, Commissioner and coach for Area Youth Sports and was active in his school district’s All Sports Boosters for many years. Jef currently serves as a board member, Treasurer, and Chair of the Finance Committee for Franklin Community Health Network and Franklin Memorial Hospital. He is also a member of the University of Maine Pulp and Paper membership committee.
