Mike Bruner Named TAPPI/PIMA Mill Manager of the Year

March 19, 2011 - Mike Bruner, mill manager with International Paperís Courtland Mill in Courtland, Alabama (USA), has been named TAPPI/PIMAís 2011 Mill Manager of the Year. This award recognizes the mill manager who has best demonstrated outstanding leadership, management and organizational skills leading to improved results at the facility for which he or she is responsible. Nominees for the award are judged on four criteria: skill in people development; application of best management practices; effective use of external resources; and change management.

Bruner will receive the award during the 2011 PaperCon Conference in Covington, Kentucky, May 1-4.

A graduate of Michigan State University with a bachelor of science degree in chemical engineering, Bruner began his career in the pulp and paper industry in 1981 as a Process Engineer at the IP Moss Point Mill in Moss Point, Miss. While there, he was assigned roles of increasing responsibility including paper machine foreman and paper machine manager. Bruner left IP briefly in 1989 to become plant manager of National Gypsum in Pryor, Okla.

Bruner returned to IP in 1990 as Paper Mill Superintendent at the Moss Point Mill. In 1992, he was transferred to IPís Texarkana Mill, Texarkana, Texas, to become the Finished Products Manager. In 1994, he left the Texarkana Mill to become the Manufacturing Manager at the Nicolet Mill in Depere, Wis., and in 1997 he accepted the position of Mill Manager at the Thilmany Mill in Kaukauna, Wis. In 2000 Bruner was named Operations Manager at the Riverdale Mill in Selma, Ala., and in 2003 he accepted his current position as Mill Manager for the Courtland Mill.

Bruner has been active in the industry throughout his career. Most recently, he served as Chair of the Alabama Pulp and Paper Council from 2004 until 2006 and was President of the Auburn Pulp and Paper Foundation from 2007 until 2009. He remains active in both organizations.
