Nippon Paper Extends Maint. Downtime at Port Angeles Mill
April 3, 2009 - Nippon Paper Industries USA will extend the regular maintenance outage at its Port Angeles, Washington mill from five days to 16 days, idling production from April 27 to May 12.
About 75 to 80 of the mill's 220 employees will be furloughed during the downtime, according to a local news report.
"The economic slowdown has negatively affected the uncoated mechanical grade market and the shutdown is necessary to balance production with inventory," resident mill manager Harold Norlund said on Wednesday.
The Port Angeles mill produces uncoated mechanical and specialty grades primarily used in telephone directories.
