Eka Chemicals to Buy Silica Sol Business in Germany

May 12, 2008 - Eka Chemicals said that it has signed an agreement to acquire the silica sol business of H.C. Starck Group (Germany), known under the brand name Levasil.

H.C. Starck´s silica sol plant is located in Leverkusen, Germany and has a production capacity of about 30,000 tons per year. The business employs approximately 50 people and supplies colloidal silica sols mainly to markets in Europe and South-East Asia.

“Eka Chemicals was the first company to apply silica sol technology in paper manufacturing," said Eka Chemicals general manager Jan Svärd. "Acquiring this business will increase to seven the number of production plants we operate in strategically important regions.”

The deal is subject to regulatory approvals, and is expected to close no later than the third quarter of 2008.
