Stora Enso Clerical Workers Stage Walkout in Finland

Jan. 17, 2008 - About 2,000 clerical (white collar) workers today walked out at Stora Enso facilities in Finland to protest the company's planned layoffs and mill closures.

The Union of Salaried Employees (TU) said in a statement sent just after midday (Finnish time) today that its board would convene at 2pm to decide on "measures to apply pressure on the authorities and Stora Enso starting next week."

The protest, planned to last until Saturday, was in response to Stora's confirmation earlier in the day that it will shut down three mills in Finland and lay off up to 985 people.

In October, Stora Enso announced it would lay off some 1,700 workers in Finland and Sweden, cut production and eliminate a third of its administrative staff worldwide.
