Svetogorsk Pulp and Paper Mill Launches New Liquid Packaging Board Grade
Dec. 21, 2006 - Svetogorsk Pulp and Paper Mill has launched a new cardboard grade for juice packaging, according to Russia's Paper and Life magazine.
Furthermore, the mill next year plans to spend $40 million on the modernization of the paper machine producing the new board for aseptic packaging.
The new liquid packaging will be shipped to Tetra Pack's facility in St. Petersburg, which previously imported it.
Fedor Chumak, director of Tetra Pack's business in St. Petersburg, said that his company has used only imported Scandinavian materials for converting juice packaging.
Chumak pointed out that over the next few years demand for liquid packaging in the region is expected to grow five-fold.
Tetra Pack's interest in local producers should grow, especially with the opening of a new facility in the Moscow region in February 2007, the news report said.
Currently, Tetra Pack controls more than 60% of the packaging market in Russia.
The Svetogorsk Pulp and Paper Mill, in Russia's Leningrad region, is owned by International Paper. In 2005, the mill produced 339,900 tons of pulp, 248,600 tons of paper, and 53,200 tons of board.
