Smurfit-Stone Container Announces Key Personnel Moves

Oct. 30, 2006 - Smurfit-Stone Container Corp. today announced key organizational changes as part of the company's transformation process.

The company has appointed Steve Strickland senior vice president, sales, for its corrugated container division. He will report to Steve Klinger, president and chief operating officer. With more than 30 years of experience in executive and sales leadership roles, Strickland is ideally suited to lead Smurfit-Stone's local sales strategy, as well as directly contribute to the overall goal of being the safest and most profitable company in the industry.

Most recently, Strickland served as senior vice president of packaging and facility supplies for Unisource, a distributor of commercial printing and imaging paper, packaging systems and facility supplies. In this role, he led a highly successful sales strategy—driving approximately $1.7 billion in sales—and headed the business transformation efforts for the company's supply system. Prior to that, Strickland served as senior vice president of operations - East at Unisource, where he was responsible for the company's $2.3 billion business. He also served as vice president of national sales, where he managed over $1 billion in sales for Unisource's national accounts organization as well as its specialty businesses, WebSource and Rollsource Converting.

Before joining Unisource, Strickland spent 19 years with Georgia-Pacific, where he served in various sales management roles for the containerboard packaging and consumer products businesses.

Additional key organizational announcements include the following.

Dwight Morris has been named regional vice president of sales for Smurfit-Stone's Midwest region. He will have primary responsibility for leading and executing targeted sales strategies within the region. Morris brings to the company more than 27 years of industry experience, most recently serving as vice president, Northeast division, for Weyerhaeuser's packaging business. Prior to that, he served as vice president, converting business for Mead Containerboard and general manager for the company's Lewisburg, TN, plant. Morris also served in various sales management positions for Mead and Inland Container. He received his BS in industrial management from Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta.

Scott Sherman has been named regional vice president of manufacturing for the Western region. He will be responsible for leading strategic manufacturing initiatives designed to optimize costs and maximize customer satisfaction, while focusing on plant specialization, capitalization and furthering manufacturing excellence. He brings with him 20 years of industry experience, most recently serving as director of sales - packaging for Weyerhaeuser. Prior to that, Sherman served as area general manager for Weyerhaeuser's Santa Paula, Camarillo and Cerritos, CA, packaging plants. He also served as general manager for the company's Salinas, CA, packaging plant, as well as in various plant management and analytical roles for Weyerhaeuser. Sherman received his BS in biology from Oregon State University in Corvallis, OR, and his MBA from Northwestern University in Evanston, IL.

Royce Kimura joins Smurfit-Stone as area sales manager, agriculture, for the Western region. Kimura joins Smurfit-Stone with 29 years of experience in the corrugated and wood packaging industry. Most recently, he served as general manager for Georgia-Pacific's packaging operations, where he managed the company's Western Region Technology and Development Center, Mechanical Packaging group and GP TOPS - West (Total Packaging Solutions) marketing plan. Prior to that, he served as western region produce manager for the company. Kimura served in various customer service, sales and plant management roles for Georgia-Pacific, as well as The Newark Group in Madera, CA. He received his BS in agricultural and managerial Economics from the University of California -Davis, CA.

Ted Pajak has been named area operations manager for the Western region. Pajak joins Smurfit-Stone with more than 13 years of experience in Weyerhaeuser's manufacturing operations. Most recently, he served as site manager for the company's Anaheim, CA, container plant. Pajak worked as site manager for the Cerritos, CA, plant as well as in various plant management roles within the company including production manager, plant superintendent and various supervisory roles. He received his BS in organizational leadership from Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN.
