Mondi Recognized by WWF with Panda Award
May 23, 2006 - Mondi Business Paper recently received the Panda Award from the WWF (World Wildlife Fund) for the second time since its inception in Austria three years ago. The WWF particularly commended Mondi's contribution to the protection of pristine forests in the Russian Komi Republic and its efforts to certify more than 1 million hectares of Komi forests according to FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) standards.
After two years of preparation, Mondi achieved its goal of certifying a large area of its leased forestry lands in March 2006. This process has highlighted the importance of long-term forestry planning, the identification of the environmental impacts of forestry, protection of rare and endangered species, conservation of pristine forests and the safeguarding of local communities.
The Panda Award is recognition of the company's particular efforts in attaining forest certification and it's commitment to sustainable development management.
